Life is what happens to you when you are busy making other plans...John Lennon
Ferdinand Hodler, Swiss (1853 - 1918) known as an Art Nouveau Painter and Lithographer, was one of the best-known Swiss artists of the 19th century. He influenced the expressionists of the next generation.
This characteristic ornamental style piece shows his powerful means of expression with strong rhythmic patterns and a tight linear structure. It is signed and dated in the lower right corner. The lettering reads Ruckzug von Marignano on the left, Ferdinand Hodler in the center, with the seal beneath his name, and Retraite de Marignan on the right. It is framed in a period wood frame and measures approximately twenty inches by twenty three and one half inches overall. The exposed (what can be seen beneath the glass)block lines measure approximately fifteen and one half inches by twenty inches not including the margins. Archival preservation would be appropriate for this piece, there is scattered foxing with the bulk mainly in the margins, but it is in overall good antique condition.
