Color is probably the most important element in my paintings, and I frequently choose objects complementary in color when composing a painting. Complements are opposite each other on the color wheel: orange/blue, red/green, yellow/violet, etc., and they naturally create contrast, drama and excitement. The trick is to also get them to behave and harmonize with each other lest confusion and chaos result. These beautiful red-violet grapes are the perfect complement to the yellow-green pears. I tried to create harmony by putting red-violet in the background as well as reflections on the pears. This is another in the “Painting A Day” series I am doing between more complex and detailed paintings. These paintings are smaller, more spontaneous and must be painted in one day (my rule). They are intended to hone my skills by forcing me to capture the essence of the scene as quickly and simply as possible. Enjoy.
