Risqué by turn of the century standards, this repoussé Art Nouveau design leaves little to the imagination, depicting a man and a woman in nature sharing an intimate moment. Note the placement of the man's left hand and the woman's right hand, which is hidden from view, and the way the woman's dress is gathered over her left arm and also draped up and over the man's left forearm, exposing her left leg.
This extraordinary brooch is approximately 110-120 years old, and constructed in two parts, with a base metal back, and the top (or front) being sterling silver. Realistic, and beautifully crafted in high relief. Fastens with an old style C clasp, typical of the type used before the invention of the safety clasp.
• SIZE: 1 7/8 inch wide X 2 1/4 inches tall.
• CONDITION: Excellent. This brooch was fully covered in black patina when I acquired it, and has been very slightly polished with a Sunshine cloth on the high spots. It could be polished to a bright shine all over, but I leave that decision to the buyer.
• MARKED: "STERLING TOP"
Item ID: 1675BR
