Henry Mayo Bateman was a cartoonist, one of England's greatest, and one of the most highly paid and sort after. He studied art at Westminster College and Goldsmiths College London before working for three years in the studio of Dutch painter Charles van Havenmaet. By 1904 he was contributing to the "Tatler" by 1915 to the "Punch". His most famous drawings "The Man Who..." a series of social gaffes and faux pas highlighting society's easily provoked outrage, first appeared in the "Tatler" in 1912. Bateman was a master of the cartoon story without words.
