There is a 14 inch long x 7 1/2 inch round hand mirror, with beveled glass, plus a 10 1/2 inch long x 4 12 inch oval hair brush, with natural bristles, and a 5 inch round powder jar with glass insert and original down puff.
Each piece has a different central 1 1/2 inch round Lady portrait, signed either Hion, Gion or Lion, and under celluloid. We believe these are hand painted on ivory. have seen these sometimes referred to as 'Marie Antoinette', but have not found documentation of that. Similar portrait vanity pieces of the period are referenced in Ettinger's Antique Dresser Sets 1890s - 1950s.
The guilloche enamel backs of the hairbrush, mirror and dresser jar lid are rimmed with finely twisted gilded metal rope braiding, that creates a striking contrast with the guilloche rays , and the handles are beautifully sculpted, again with a rope theme, but this time worked into the metal with Apollo craftsmanship.
The hair brush still has a label 'PURE BRISTLES STERILIZED' and the jar is also stamped APOLLO. The mirror and crystal insert have a label stating: 'for reorder or for matching pieces, use A1476/6 APOLLO'. The jar also has APOLLO engraved on its base.
It is becoming harder to find these metalwork vanity accessories by Apollo, and especially in this excellent condition. It appears that this set has never been used, but was likely only displayed. The gold plated metal is untarnished and still has high gloss.
