According to Sharon and Bob Huxford in their book “The Collectors Encyclopedia of Weller Pottery, ”Very rarely, a piece is found in a matt glaze marked with a Louwelsa seal, and a hand incised “Matt.” Early attempts at these matt glazes were often unsuccessful, and the ware came from the kilns plagued with fissures and holes in the surface.”
This beautiful vase has it all - the matt glaze, in fabulous blue, the hand-incised ‘Matt’ mark, and absolutely no fissures or holes. The shades-of-blue floral decoration is excellent, showing good depth in it’s three-dimension layers.
Condition is Very Good - no cracks, no chips, no hairlines. The cream-color interior of this vase shows minimal crazing, as can be expected for a vase approximately 100 years old. On the underside, there are two very minor silvery marks, as if something had brushed up against the vase. Certainly they can be removed, although I haven’t attempted. They are hardly noticeable, but I mention them here for the sake of accuracy. Do take a look at my photos for more details.
Height is a grand 6 inches tall, with the base being a full five inches across. Nice, nice, nice
