This is a map of that fair and the surrounding streets of Chicago in 1933. Published by “CONOCO” (Think Gas Stations, but way before prices soared and service took a nose dive) because “Every Conoco station is a branch of the Conoco Travel Bureau.” What I really love about this particular map are the little gems lost in time and memory. Like the listing for the Maximum Speed Laws: Illinois .... 45 miles per hour; Indiana...Reasonable and proper. Let me repeat that. The maximum speed law for the state of Indiana was “Reasonable and proper.”
Now if that is not enough to pique your interest the Federal Gasoline Tax added to gasoline was .01 cent, the Illinois gas tax was a whopping .04 cents! Other pearls of information from the map tell us that Adults could gain admission to the fair for the sum of .50 cents, and accompanying children under 12 years of age would only cost .25 cents, unless it was a Friday. Fridays only, the children’s rate was .05 cents. The map goes on to tell us what it cost to enter each of the attractions and rides, many were free, however quite a few were not.
Like any map that will get you around town it also lists points of interest, Conoco Gas Stations, paved roads, improved roads and dirt roads. I have to say, it looks to me like the improved and dirt roads out number the paved ones.
The Map condition is near new quality. It is 27 Inches wide and 20 Inches long and printed on both sides. The colors are bright and vibrant with no fading. It does have a few deeper creases in some of the folds, however I have not noticed any discoloration, foxing, smudges or corner ware.
