The crown mark, used from 1934-1950, was first incised, then stamped, then changed from the crown over William Goebel’s initials, to a smaller stamped crown over his last name. The last incarnation is also known as the “Wide Ducal Crown Mark” or “Narrow Crown” and was used until 1950.

Between 1946 and 1948, a time when World War II had ended and the American occupational forces allowed exportation again, the pieces were marked with various stamps to show it was made in Occupied Germany. In 1948, when the country was divided into East and West Germany, the company stamp included “West Germany” or “W. Germany” on its Country of Origin stamp. This statuette was exported between 1946 and 1948.

Created by Master Sculptor Reinhold Unger in 1936, this little guy is now in his 8th trademark, as listed in "Hummel Figurines and Plates: Identification and Price Guide," by Carl F. Luckey (12th edition). My little skier is missing one of his wooden ski poles; however, this does not affect the value of this stunning figurine, as the reference book cited declares, “The poles are replaceable and are not considered significant in the valuation of the piece” (Pg.94, Hummel #59: Skier).

Luckey’s guide suggests the secondary market price of # 59 as being $860.00. I am asking below that price, also adjusting for some very slight crazing on the top and underside of the base. I have seen no other crazing evident on him.

This Hummel has the following hallmark/marking incised on the left, down hill side of the base edge: M. I. Hummel. Back stamps/trademarks incised on the bottom include: style number "59."; crown over C. W. trademark, also called TMK-1; inside a black oblong box in black is “Made in U.S.-Zone Germany”. A black hand-painted signature mark of the painter of the figure is under the glaze, and in the same manor, the numbers “7.48".

A little about Sister Hummel: Born in Bavaria in 1909, Berta Hummel entered the religious life and in 1934, took the name Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel. At the age of 25, Sister Hummel was already an accomplished artist, having graduated form Munich’s Academy of Applied Arts; her talents were allowed to flourish at Siessen Convent as an art teacher. It was here, before passing from tuberculosis at the age of 37, that Sister Hummel painted and sold her renditions of the beloved cherub-like children that surrounded her throughout her life. The sale to local publishers helped raise money for the convent and its humanitarian works. The publishers in turn sold Sister’s paintings in the form of postcards. It was one of these postcards that caught the eye of Franz Goebel, and in 1935 “the rest became history” as they say.

If you would like to know more about Sister M. I. Hummel, her work, where her figurines are produced today and how, I suggest you visit the official website.
