Born in Bavaria in 1909, Berta Hummel would later enter religious life and take the name Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel in 1934. At this tender young age of 25, Sister Hummel was already an accomplished artist having graduated form Munich’s Academy of Applied Arts. Her talents were allowed to flourish at Siessen Convent as an art teacher. It was here, before passing from Tuberculosis at the age of 37 that Sister Hummel painted and sold her renditions of the beloved cherub like children that surrounded her throughout her life. The sale to local publishers helped raise money for the convent and it’s humanitarian works. The publishers in turn sold Sister’s paintings in the from of post cards. It was one of these post cards that caught the eye of Franz Goebel, and in 1935 and, “the rest became history” as they say. If you would like to know more about Sister M. I. Hummel, her work, where her figurines are produced today and how, I suggest you visit the M.I.Hummel official website.

This adorable, older Hummel is in excellent condition, and has no repairs, chips, cracks, nicks, paint loss. There is some very minor crazing on the underside of the “doughnut” base.

This is a beautiful, vintage, M I Hummel #361 figurine is called "Favorite Pet". This design was created in 1959 by master sculptor Theo R. Menzenback in collaboration with Sister Hummel. It was patented in 1960 by the Goebel factory and was first introduced in the U.S. market in 1964 at the New York World's Fair. It stands approx. 4.5 inches tall and weighs 6.6 oz. The bottom has the blue Goebel / Hummel 3 line T M K- 4 mark that dates it between 1964-1972. I happen to know that this particular hummel was purchased in New York, New York while my Mother in law attended the Worlds Fair there.

My husbands mother was the original owner, the collection has since passed on to me. Not being able to find suitable homes for many of the things in my “Rafter Room” I am now offering them to you, exclusively, here on Ruby Lane.

Listed in, Luckey’s "Hummel Figurines and Plates: Identification and Price Guide," by Carl F. Luckey (12th Edition), "Favorite Pet" #361 with a T M K- 4 mark had a then current value between $375.00 and $450.00 in 2003. If you know Berta’s work, you also know the value only goes up with the passing years. This particular mold design has had 8 trademarks and is now out of production.

This Hummel has the following hallmarks / markings on the base:

M. I. Hummel embossed around the back edge, and a paper sticker tag “Best Friends” on the side. Back stamps / Trademarks on the Bottom include: Incised stamps: Style number "361", Copy right date "1960", and the Number "31" (small). The Sharp Blue Three Line Trademark, also called T M K - 4 stamp. There is also a black handwritten signature mark under the glaze.
