Antique Victorian French Jet Black Glass Mourning Brooch with Woven Hair

This brooch must have been quite the stunner in its day. Made of faceted and beveled pieces of black glass, the hexagonal piece has an oval center detail of woven medium-brown hair under glass with a brass floral border.

The back of the brooch is japanned base metal. The piece has a simple c-clasp and an extra long needle.

Measuring 2 1/4" by 1 7/8", the brooch is in good condition, especially considering its age (ca 1880s). There are a few small chips, and if you look at the kidney-shaped glass near the tip of the needle, you will notice that it is missing one end. Nevertheless, this is still a very wearable brooch that could be restored or used as a reference piece. Priced accordingly.
