Snuff boxes were foundation of the box business in the west of Scotland town of Mauchline. They were originally the mainstay of the town's eponymous industry in hand -decorated, transfer printed and tartan ware in particular. The line drawing on this one, with its integral hinge, features an aborigine (??) sitting on a rock, taunting a tied-up dog with a stick.. "Dont you wish you may get it". Condition good. This rectangular (with corners cut off) 2 3/4" by 1 1/2" by just under 1" high black lacquer covered snuff box is a sturdy piece. The silver inlaid lid decoration represents hound bouncing along by water. Made around 1880 the box remains in excellent condition and dust tight so still suitable for the pocket. This is more or less the standard size for a snuff box from the Scottish town of Mauchline. The 3 1/2" by 1 1/2" by 3/4" piece with an integral hinge is covered by an immaculate finish in the McBeth tartan. It dates from around 1860 and is most probably from one of the factories of the fabled Smith family. Condition perfect. Worldwide insured air shipping included in listed price.
