This piece depicts a Colonial Street scene on a rainy day, in which a young gallant is chivalrously holding an umbrella for a beautiful maiden. There are a bevy of onlookers viewing this act (including a sandal-footed monk), and the depiction of this slice of Colonial life is true to life. The details in this scene are extraordinary - On the men, note the tricorn hats, the cutaway jackets, the ornate vests, the ruffled cravats, and the breeches with stockings. On the ladies, note the mop caps, the lace trimmed petticoats and sleeves, and the shawl collars. The Colonial Period is exemplified in this work. In fact, depictions of the Colonial period was very popular at the turn of the century, and this work owes its genesis to another.. Dubois acknowledges his inspiration by another great painter, Carlos Alonzo Perez (Spanish, 19th-20th century), in the reference on the reverse of this plaque by the words "L'averse d'apres Perez" ( translation -"Inclement weather according to Perez")
This Limoges plaque has a wonderful highly ornate gold rococo rim that is elaborately scalloped, scrolled, and heavily gilded. This wonderful scene was handpainted on a Lewis STRAUS and Sons (LS&S) blank, bearing the LS&S mark #1 (overglaze exporting red circle mark, ca. 1890s - mid 1920's - ref. Gaston's "Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3 ed., pg 278).
CONDITION: EXCELLENT Condition, no chips, cracks, hairlines, or crazing. Gold is in very good condition, a little wear to the high rococo edges, but this is normal for plates of this age. I would estimate the gold to be about 99% intact.
There are some slight scratches in the area of the bystanders, particularly by the feet of the man in the breeches - this is common in very old plaques of this type, but I wanted to mention this for accuracy. Dubois has also utilized the technique of "scratching" on the porcelain canvas to indicate rain...note the downpour above the umbrella..
PLAQUE Size: 15 5/8 inches in circumference by about 2 inches deep.
