OFFERED HERE IS A TRIPLE RARITY!!
1). "DUBOIS" signed LIMOGES plaques of this size (17 1/2 inches!!) and condition are hard to find. This Limoges plaque has a wonderful highly ornate gold rococo rim that is elaborately scalloped, scrolled, and heavily gilded. This beauty bears the Flambeau (L.D.B. & Co.) Limoges green mark. The mark on the bottom of the plaque is detailed in Gaston's fabulous "Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3 ed., pg 120) as the Flambeau green overglaze decoration mark #4 (Flambeau Limoges, France, printed in canner around torch with "Hand Painted", ca. 1890's - 1900s). This remarkable plaque is a full 17 1/2 inches in circumference, and is approximately 1 3/4 inches deep (I have not removed it from the frame to take an exact measurement of depth). Please note the perfect condition of the porcelain, no chips, cracks, or hairlines. 2). What is even rarer are plaques that have been framed as nicely as this one is in a gold gilded foliate detailed frame. Further, this special find is mounted on ruched purple velvet. The overall size of the frame is 30 inches by 30 inches, and is 2 inches deep. The frame is more contemporary, but it's scale fits the proportion of the large plaque. Believe me, if you have ever priced framing of these plaques, you will know how expensive this process is, and how rare it is to find one already framed. 3). Finally, none of the expertly painted Dubois scenes I have ever seen have a middle-eastern Cleopatra and Pharaoh theme. Around the turn of the century there was a renewed interest in the exotic middle east, and many paintings of the time reflected this interest. Dubois, being one of the premier porcelain decorators of his time, was particularly known for his portrait plaques, and his artistry was unquestioned and highly sought after. As evidence of his artistry, look to the little touches Dubois likes to throw into his paintings...Note the tall brightly colored peacock feather fan resting in the corner, the side view of a large statue in a niche behind the couple, the huge urn in the near corner, the sandals of the kneeling lover, the snake headdress on this head, the gold medallion cuff on Cleopatra's arm. All are touches that signal Dubois' hand without even looking to his signature, which is readily available in the lower right hand corner. The coloration of this plaque is highly vibrant in hues of magenta, purple, gold, and green. Dubois has the pharaoh kneeling at Cleopatra's feet, she is gingerly touching his hand, and he is gazing at her with affection. In fact the whole scene is a loving one of gentle affection and tenderness. A very pretty highly decorative pretty scene. Examples of Dubois plaques can be found in both Gaston's and Debby DuBay's fine books CONDITION: EXCELLENT Condition, no chips, cracks, hairlines, or crazing. Almost no wear whatsoever to gold, except the small amount on the handles mentioned previously.
PLAQUE (CHARGER) Size: About 17 1/2 inches in circumference by about 1 3/4 inches deep.
