This lovely and most UNIQUE vase is as much about form as it is about image, with an ovoid body, a square base, and ornate curved and curlicued handles that extend from the body to the substantial rim of the vase. The gold gilted handles flow along the side of the neck and touch the neck in a inward curved "c" at about midpoint, and then flow upwards in small "wings to embrace the neck and the bottom of the rim. The rim is likewise gilt enhanced, and has symmetrical notched interest. The Central Medallion is a beauty to behold. This softly rendered and amply curved woman is bending over to smell calla lilies in the field. Her skin tones are naturalistic, and the soft pink of her scarf slows in the wind. The medallion has a simple gold outline, which is enhanced by the more extensive gold work thought the piece. The triangle shaped forms of the boarders are wide, and have a notched interest. This detail is repeated three times on the vase, at the top of the neck, at the bottom of the neck, and at the bottom of the body. The VIBRANT Maroon color of the vase is eyecatching and glossy, glossy, glossy. You can even see my reflection in one of the pictures. I do not think this vase saw much handling, and when one considers that it is at least 110 years old!! that is saying something. Needless to say, the condition of the paint belies its century plus old state. Aside from the beautiful and desirable central medallion, the handles, rim, and mouth of this lovely vase speak for themselves. This beauty is in wonderful condition, perhaps indicating that this vase was rarely used, but kept as a display piece. Aside from a very little wear on the handles, you might believe that this vase was manufactured 10 years ago, instead of 110 years ago. Further, the IMMACULATE condition of this vase attests to the fact that this was a cherished cabinet treasure, and was kept away from the elements. Please note: This is a very unusual Limoges mold. I have another very similar vase, same color, same shape, only the paint is not in as good condition. The central medallion is untouched, though, and it would make a nice companion piece to this lovely. If you are interested, please contact me, and I will be very reasonable with regard to price.
