ANOTHER Beautifully Handpainted LIMOGES CANTEEN vase. This lovely NOTCHED ARCHED handled Canteen Vase was painted by a very talented artist who signed the initials "M.W." next to the mark on the bottom. This artist work seems to resemble that of Franz Bischoff, whose renderings of chrysanthemums are especially beautiful. This beauty was painted on a HAVILAND FRANCE Limoges blank (green mark #12 - underglaze white ware mark in green, full name with "France", ca. 1894 - 1931, ref. Gaston's book).
This lovely and most UNIQUE vase has been FULLY painted with a wonderful CHRYSANTHEMUM FLORAL motif, with an unusual Canteen shape to the body, and arched notched handles that extend from the narrow neck and mouth of the vase. The handles seem to reflect the shape of the body, and the effect is very pleasing. The Canteen Shape allows a large canvas for the artist to paint on, and this artist has made full use of both sides. This beauty has a completely painted exterior, decorated with a "CHRYSANTHEMUM" motif that covers both sides of the body. The Fuchsia Pink, Medium Pink, and Purple Flowers are beautifully painted and quite the center point of the piece. They are detailed with shaded naturalistic green leaves, and are painted to reflect depth and complexity. The artist seems to have studied impressionism, as the flowers are painted to reflect feel as well as form. The MUMS are painted in clusters simulating the "on-the-vine" appearance of flowers in nature. There is shading to the leaves, and the background variegates from a complex shaded greenish tone at the top to a light brownish color toward the base. THe background reflects the impressionist training, as the brushstrokes apply the paint in small touches rather than in one solid wash. The handles are gilt enhanced and the neck and the rim are painted a moss green which extends into the mouth. The "M.W." initials are painted in a sienna color on the bottom near the mark.
The condition of the paint belies its century old state.
The Two Notched and Arched GOLD handles rise from the body of the vase, and extend into the narrow mouth, and this seems to reflect the unusual canteen shape of the mold. This beauty is in wonderful condition, perhaps indicating that this vase was lightly used, and kept as a display piece. Further, the IMMACULATE condition of this vase attests to the fact that this was a cherished cabinet treasure, and was kept away from the elements. There is a very, very small amount of wear to the gilt on the handles, and that is all.
Please note: This is a very unusual Limoges mold. I will be selling another vase with this mold type, but these canteen vases are rarely seen. Examples of this mold are seen in Reed's fine book, "Pickard China," pg. 250 (plate 701).
Condition: EXCELLENT Condition, no chips, cracks, hairlines, or crazing. Almost no wear whatsoever to gold, except the small amount on the handles mentioned previously.
Size: About 9 inches tall by about 7 inches wide (at the widest part of body). About 4 1/2 inches wide from handle to handle. Rim measures 1 3/8 inches across, and base measures 2 3/4 inches by 2 1/4 inches. Measures about 18 1/2 inches in circumference around the widest portion of the body.
