This wonderful type of Decanter is rare seen and highly prized!! The rarely seen piece was usually used for whiskey or liquors, and it is rare to find one in mint condition. This lovely item is handpainted by a VERY talented unknown artist, but I believe the quality of the work to be of that of a studio artist!! Note how the blackberries are shaded, and how the leaves accent the fruit clusters and lead the eye to the handle and the body of the piece. Note the fluid line of branches that lead out from the clusters. Further, the background coloring gives the illusion of additional foliage, and the variegation of background color from brown at the base, to gold in the body, to yellow at the rim, lead the eye upward to the unusual fluted rim. I also like the particularly like light touch of blue that highlights the delicate flowers at the neck of the decanter. The P.H. Leonard mark with crown, green underglaze, on the bottom reflects the mark of a New York Importer of Bohemian and French Porcelain, and the mark shown corresponds to ca. 1890 - 1908 as per Robert Rontgen's fabulous & essential "Marks on German, Bohemian, and Austrian Porcelain - 1710 to the present".
This lovely decanter had the highly collected BLACKBERRY MOTIF on both sides of the body, a large fluid "C" shaped handle, and a fluted rim at the top. The Stopper is bulbous at the end and is painted in the same sunshine yellow as the fluted rim. The nice touch of being finely painted on both sides is a much desired but rarely seen attribute. The blackberries are finely painted, and the large variegated handle matches the variegation of the body and shows very little wear. This item is often mistaken for a Limoges piece. It is very similar to an AKD (Klingenberg) decanter detailed by Gaston (Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain) on page 221 (plate #537). Further, similar examples can also be seen in Reed's book on Pickard China.
Size: Approx. 9 1/4 inches tall. The body is approx. 5 inches wide at the widest area of the body.
(The Stopper measures 3 1/2 inches by 1 3/4 inches).
Condition: Mint condition, no chips, cracks, crazing, chips or hairlines.
