A RARE OLD Tankard (Mug)! Beautifully and artistically done, this Jean Pouyat (JPL) Tankard was handpainted by a very talented artist who proudly signed his work with his initial "G." near the handle (see closeup of initial). The green decorating mark on the bottom is Jean Pouyat (JP/L) mark #5, underglaze white ware mark with "France", ca. 1890 - 1932. (ref. Gaston's "Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain", pg. 238). This beautifully handpainted tankard has the much collected Blackberry Cluster motif, with a bold gold edge enhancing rim, and highlighting the handle. As you can see in the pictures below, the painting is extremely fine and has been done by a porcelain artist of the finest quality. It is very likely that "G." was a factory artist. I say this because of the professionalism and artistry of this piece! The blackberries are painted and shaded to impart depth and ripeness with glorious shades of purple and grape. There is shading and depth to the leaves and they are painted to reflect the "imperfect" state of nature. Further, it is the painting of the leaves that truly bring the berries alive. They are painted with the full use of the artist's palette...there are colors ranging form taupe to yellow, and orange to green with touches of blue and purple. The background tones of yellow, brown, and cream variegate to accentuate the blackberry cluster in the foreground. The condition of the paint belies its very old state. The handle on this wonderful tankard is a more elaborate variation of the simple"c" shaped handle, but it is gilded and sturdy. The tankard has a straight body that sets on a double stacked base at the bottom. The cream background color extends to the base. Please note: there are two small old stains on the bottom of the base, and looks as if they were with made during firing or made shortly after by setting on something dark. They are old, and mentioned for accuracies sake. Aside from this, this beauty is in perfect condition and only waits to sit on your mantle or in your china cabinet!
Size: 5 1/2 inches tall. About 4 3/8 inches in diameter at the base tapering to 3 1/2 inches in diameter at the rim.
Condition: Mint condition, no chips , cracks, crazing, or hairlines. Aside from the little marks mentioned above, no detractions whatsoever.
