A RARE OLD Tankard (Mug)! Beautifully and artistically done, this CAC (CERAMIC ART COMPANY) BELLEEK Tankard was handpainted by a very talented artist who proudly (and with a flourish!) signed his work, "A.B. Robinson". The green decorating mark on the bottom is CAC Palette mark #1 which corresponds to the time period between 1889 to 1906. The Ceramic Art Company was the original name of the Lenox Company (which was changed in 1906), and it was located in Trenton, New Jersey. The Ceramic Art Company only utilized the Belleek name for 17 short years, but in those few short years they created such beautiful and unique works of porcelain art that they rival those made by Limoges and Pickard, and are much prized and highly collectible today. The biography of the The Ceramic Art "Belleek" Company (CAC) can be found in Mary Frank Gaston's classic "American Belleek".
The beautifully painted tankard has the much collected "GRAPES-on-vine" motif, with a fine gold edge enhancing rim. As you can see in the pictures below, the painting is extremely fine and has been done by a porcelain artist of the finest quality. It is very likely that "A.B. Robinson" was a factory artist. This is a very important distinction, as many CAC factory artists DID NOT sign their work. According to Gaston's "American Belleek" (Paducah, Kentucky: Collector Books, 1984" pg. 20,
"Singed examples (of CAC Belleck) command a higher price".
It is easy to see why...Look at the artistry of this piece! The grapes are painted to reflect two different varietals, and are painted in beautiful purple, rose, and deep salmon tones. There is shading and depth to the leaves and they are painted to reflect the "crinkled edge" state in nature, the varietals of grapes are almost lifelike in their portrayal, and the background variegates between light pastel colors (pink green, ecru, blue) to accentuate the foreground. The condition of the paint belies its century old state. The handle on this wonderful tankard is a simple "c" shaped handle, but it is likewise shaded in variegated pastels to blend in with the body of the piece. There tankard flares out at the bottom, and the body decoration goes all the way to the base. Please note that this tankard tapers from a larger more substantial base to a smaller more delicate rim.
Size: 5 1/2 inches tall. About 4 3/8 inches in diameter at the base tapering to 3 1/4 inches in diameter at the rim.
Condition: Mint condition, no chips , cracks, crazing, or hairlines.
