This fantastic hand carved Indian Rosewood chair dates from the mid to late 1800's. Look closely at the pictures at all the highly intricate hand carving. This chair was most likely made in Coompta within the Madras Presidency of Colonial British India in around 1870. I believe that the carved work originating from this part of India is possibly the best available from anywhere in the world and this is a perfect example of the genre. Historically, the Coompta and Mysore artisans are descendants of hereditary gudigars, expert temple carvers who originated from the Goa Region and migrated south in the 16th century in order to avoid conversion to Christianity during Portuguese occupation. This chair is constructed of thick Rosewood which has been expertly carved over 100% of the surface in some depth and with a detail that is unsurpassed anywhere in my opinion. This is a piece of art as well as a chair. Very rare and not often seen. The cushion is made from an old rug. Dimensions are 43" tall - 18" wide - 17" deep.
