Welcome to PinkAntiques. Oh how I love this basket. This is an old French egg basket made of heavy wire forming the 8 spines that make up the body's frame (including the little feet). A thinner wire was then wrapped around and secured on the 8 wires of frame. The handles were made and secured separately. They are unique handles that can drop down to the side when the basket is sitting, but then lift up and meet in the middle for carrying the basket. The patina is wonderful to me...a little shiny in places, a little rusty in others, a little flat in yet others. The basket with handles up stands 11 inches tall, 6 1/2 with handles down. It is 8 1.2 inches across with a 5 1/2 inch opening at the top of the basket. The wonderful little feet are 1/2 inch high.

If you like primitive objects, this is for you. Whoever made this is certainly a craftsman the way the wires are woven and secured. It is a fascinating piece of early art.
