A short history of lobsters: Some, such as folks in Maine and lots of other places, love to eat them. Some are Surrealists fanciers, who love merely to see them depicted. And some are like Woody Allen, who famously fended one off in a kitchen with a broom.

I fall into the middle category and simply am fascinated by depictions of the charismatic crustacean. This particular item is like a piece of pretty jewelry and very much reminds me of sophisticated renderings by Estee' Lauder for her perfumes, despite the fact this fellow is utterly pristine and scentless inside. Remarkably, considering his craftsmanship, he is unsigned. Measurements are just over 2 1/2" when closed, so double that when when opened.

Constructed of goldtone metal, his body is composed of contrasting stripes of pave'-set rhinestones and gleaming red enamel. His eyes are two tiny ruby-red rhinestones. He is substantially built fellow and is in excellent vintage condition. I would hazard a guess he is c.1970s-'80s.
