19th C. Limoges Enamel on Copper Portrait in Frame

A 19th Century Limoges painted Enamel on copper with gilding set into brass frame, featuring the portrait of a young woman with a wreath in her hair. This enamel is exectuted in the style of the Renaissance masters, featuring a shaded sea green background with vivid jewel tone painting adorning the figure.

The art of "email champleve" dates back to the Middle Ages, but the famous Limoges Enamels reached its zenith during the artistic movement of the Renaissance. It was then that artists began to apply the enamel powders to the same copper base and then fire those enamels to form a semi-translucent glass-like surface. At first, the masters used biblical works as their subjects but later many other sources became available. In the 19th century, there arose a large movement to re-create enamels based on the works of earlier Renaissance masters.

The enamel is in excellent condition, initial signed, and beautifully detailed; size of frame 5" D, size of enamel 3" D.
