Set of Six (6) George Buffon Hand Colored Engravings

A handsome set of six hand colored engravings from an edition of George Louis Leclerc Buffon's "Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière" volumes (general and particular natural history). These are original 18th century engravings from his great work Histoire Naturelle, first published in 1789, completed in 1821.

Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon's views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. He is best remembered for his great work Histoire Naturelle, which included everything currently known about the natural world. In it, Buffon considered the similarities between humans and apes, and the possibility of a common ancestry. Buffon's work is considered to have greatly influenced modern ecology.

The prints are handsomely mounted in a burred walnut faux worm eaten frame with coordinating matting and hand drawn borders. They are all in excellent condition, ready to hang; size of frame 21" H x 18 1/2" W, size of visible art 9" H x 7" W.
