An incredible 18th century oil painting on board by German artist, Johann Peter Neeff, (1753-1796) signed and dated 1794. The painting depicts young couples dancing around a maypole, while musicians play their instruments in the background under a grape arbor next to the cottage. The painting epitomizes the popular style of 18th century artists who seized upon the less harsh moments of life and immortalized them in charming pastoral scenes such as this. The painting relays the delighted expressions of the dancers and their colorful costumes. Neeff gaily depicts this celebration and takes the viewer back to a simpler time. Painted on a hand-hewn board, the warm earthy tones and extensive depth draw you into the scene and keep you there. It is in excellent condition, commensurate with age, and appears to retain its original frame; Size 32.5" width by 21" in height.
