Pr. Louis XV Gilded Stools or Tabourets

Extremely rare pair of paint decorated gilded Louis XV carved stools with upholstered seats. In the Louis XV period, it was considered a great privilege and sign of high rank to be permitted to sit on a stool in the presence of the King. Thus stools were always a highly prized and important part of the decoration. Pieces from this period are very scarce and a pair even more so. This pair of beautifully carved gilded stools with their blanc de plomb finish have been reupholstered in a French designer fabric reminiscent of their original upholstery.

Their provenance is from a small castle in Germany. In the 18th and 19th century many German carvers flocked to France to learn the trade of the "ebeniste" as the restrictions of the guild had been lifted. Many of these craftsmen remained in France, but some took their knowledge and talent back to Germany. It is thought that these pieces could possibly have been carved in Germany in the French style. The workmanship is exceptional and the carving is unsurpassed. Circa late 18th to early 19th century, size 19" H x 22" W x 22" D.
