Mid 19th C. French Miniature Portrait on Ivory of Marie Antoinette

Mid 19th century French miniature watercolor portrait on ivory depicting Marie Antoinette in one of her famous Mob caps with feathers. Marie Antoinette was fond of dressing up and frolicking as a peasant, she was often painted wearing these informal hats, however in this portrait, her lovely dress is adorned with ribbons and ruffles which is in direct contrast to her head wear.

The painting is signed by the artist, Lafoy, executed in very nice detail with a shaded backdrop, seen in the background of her right side is a gazebo. The portrait is set into a pierced bronze cast frame with suspension ring backed with silk embroidered fabric. Both the painting and the frame are in excellent condition.

This painting came from a fine estate, whose miniature portrait collection was famous for its quality and size.
