Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) was a French sculpture who found most of his inspiration in the earlier works of Italian artists like Michelangelo. His masterpiece was “Ugolino and His Sons,” inspired by Dante’s Inferno. So impressive was his talent, that he became the aristocratic sculptor of choice for the Imperial family. His figures were naturalistic with dramatically charged poses and he was often at odds with a society that was used to a more subdued style.
