Magnificent 19th century French Boulle Jewel Casket of the second Empire period. The box is a fine example of this spectacular art form created by Andre Boulle (1642 - 1732) the royal Eboniste in the 17th century. The box features the red tortoiseshell inlaid with scrolled bronze cut-work and mounted with deeply engraved dore bronze railings. The lid is hinged and opens to reveal a deep compartment covered in burgundy moire satin and velvet; surmounted on a plinth base with lion paw feet. This is a large box in overall excellent condition with minor age discrepancies. The lock is functional with key escutcheon, the lid is monogramed in the center with what appears to be the letters MM. This is a large impressive piece, admirable for its detailed workmanship, condition, and beauty;
size 7" H x 13 1/2" L x 10 1/2" D.
