A spectacular early 19th century English china Inkstand by Coalbrookdale/Coalport consisting of a tray, ink pot, quill pot with duster, and candlestick. The set is purely decorative and heavily laden with the most beautiful flower encrustation imaginable. A very rare matched suite, these are almost impossible to find, in fact this is only the second one we’ve had in our 45 years of business. This is a real beauty, with very minor damage to a few flower petals, to be expected at almost 200 years of age. Definitely a cabinet showpiece, these treasures were purely decorative and never really made to be used. Many of the English porcelain manufacturers produced floral encrustation, but none equaled the superb craftsmanship of the Minton or Coalport artists, and their pieces are quite distinguishable.
The wares at Coalport, of this flower-encrusted class, were usually termed Coalbrookdale and were inspired by the floral-encrusted wares of the Dresden/Meissen factories. The artists at Coalport produced some superb examples with delicately colored flowers on Rococo forms often with vividly colored backgrounds. These wares were painstaking to make as everything was done by hand, and because of their delicacy, few have survived intact.
