“Daisy Makeig-Jones’ talent as a painter quickly attracted the attention of Cecil Wedgwood who hired her as an apprentice in 1909. Superbly gifted, she quickly rose to design her own line of fanciful china decorated with oriental dragons and other nauturalistic patterns. Her pinnacle was reached with her flamboyant Fairyland Lustre designs released in 1915. These colorful imaginative pieces were in stark contrast to the war raging in Europe and offered an escape from its horrors. The line proved popular across the pond in America and as a result Wedgwood’s profits soared. The popularity of her designs unfortunately begin to fade with the onset of the Great Depression and Wedgwood discontinued the china in 1929. An often difficult and demanding person, Makeig-Jones’ unrealistic expectations soon landed her in disfavor with Wedgwood and she left in a fury in 1931. She died in 1945, but created a legacy of virtuoso work that is highly collected today.
