Papier mache has existed since ancient times but the technique improved in the 18th century with the discovery of two new techniques. The first, japanning, which was a cheaper more efficient way to decorate papier mache products. The practice was adopted in both England and France. The second was Henry Clay’s invention of layering sheets of pasted paper together as opposed to pulped paper which produced a stronger more durable product and allowed for larger pieces to be made. During the 19th century many papier mache products were produced in England and France for exportation to the United States. Many of these Victorian pieces have survived and continue to be collected and loved by Antique connoisseurs.
