An interesting study in human behavior, this watercolor by Roman artist, Pio Joris, (1843-1921) epitomizes the gap between the upper untouchable class and the poor lower class beggar. The woman or nurse maid is shielding her ward from the grasp of the unfortunate man while kindly bestowing him a few lire. The realistic face of the woman and child contrast sharply with the almost surreal image of the beggar, a trait that Joris used consistently in his work.

Pio Joris was a talented painter, engraver, and acquarellista who won many awards throughout his lifetime and was famous in late 19th century Rome as a spirited realist. He was a friend and contemporary of artist Mariano Fortuny and constantly exhibited in other countries including all the famous Paris Salons. His paintings and watercolors can be found in major museums and private art collections.

The watercolor is in excellent condition, framed and matted behind glass; size of frame 33 ½” H x 28” W, size of image 21” H x 14” W.
