An exquisite late 19th century footed Bouillon Cup and matching saucer made by the Dresden decorating firm of Ambrosius Lamm, f. 1887 – 1949. The set is decorated in a deep maroon luster glazed finish, which is highlighted by a heavy application of gilt jewelling and beading. The cup is further enhanced with a hand-painted scene typical of Watteau’s paintings, which depict courting couples in period dress. Mint condition, a true collector’s item and cabinet piece. Size of cup 2 ¾” H x 5 ½” D (handle to handle) size of saucer 5 7/8” D.
Ambrosius Lamm operated a porcelain painting studio in Dresden from 1887 to 1949. Lamm’s studio was known for painting in the Meissen, Vienna, and Copenhagen style. He was highly regarded and known for producing work of the highest artistic quality. His pieces can be found in some of the most sophisticated collections and prices for his original work continue to climb. Lamm often used blanks from the Rosenthal factory, of which this set is a prime example. They can be distinguished by the star-cut pattern inside the cup. He used three different marks, the better known is the figure of a Lamb with “Dresden” printed underneath.
