Laurits Andersen Ring was known for such paintings as the one presented here, as he is considered one of the foremost painters of Danish symbolism and realism. A man of strong political convictions, his work remained an idealistic, true depiction of his humble beginnings. He never strayed far from those simple characterizations in his art and often depicted scenes and people he had known in the simple villages of his youth. He was a friend and contemporary of Hans Christian Andersen and became an important fixture in the early 20th century art scene. Most Scandinavian museums will have at least one (if not several) of his pieces. He was born in the village of Ring in the south of Zealand (Denmark's largest island) and adopted the name of his birthplace after 1881. Please also refer to "L.A. Ring, On The Edge of The World," a 267 comprehensive book detailing his life and work.
