This is a lovely old medium sized white ironstone platter. It is very basic and simple and is almost modern in design. It is large enough to hold a roasting chicken or small roast beef, etc. It is in good condition for an item that is over 100 years old and served many utilitarian purposes. It has a few brown spots and has a manufacturing flaw on the back of the platter. Please see the photos for details of flaw and spots. The platter is marked “Prince of Wales, Royal Patent Ironstone, Burgess & Goddard”. It dates from around 1862 to the 1890’s. The Prince of Wales Pottery were established by Benjamin Shirley of Bangor Wales on the day of the marriage of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales March 10, 1863 and were named the Prince of Wales Works in honor of the event. The company changed partners and names over the years and were in business until 1925. They did business from 1863 until 1864 as Shirley & Freeman. From 1865 till 1867 they were Hammersley & Freeman. In 1868 through they carried on as Hammersley, Freeman & Co. From 1872 through 1875 they operated as Hammersley & Asbury after Freeman retired from the concern in 1870. Finally after the death of Hammersley in 1875 they continued on as E. Asbury & Company until 1925. They definitely had a good long history for a pottery. Many potteries came and went out of business during this period. Burgess &Goddard were importers and exporters from 1858 through 1890. Measurements to be added later.
