Danish Skonvirke Antique Silver Hinged Bracelet: Bernhard Hertz

Signed silver bracelet from the Danish silversmith firm of Bernhard Hertz utilizes the Arts and Crafts style known as skonvirke (meaning "beautiful work") that came about in the early 20th century. According to Christie Romero on page 232 in Warman's Jewelry Third Edition, this style made use of repoussage and chasing, and this bracelet, with its chasing on the front in an intricate design shows the dramatic look that can be achieved. The bracelet has a cross-over or by-pass style and is hinged to open and close easily, with a safety chain as well. It measures just under 2 1/2" across the inside dimension when closed. The front is 1/2" in height, and the back is approximately 3/8". The silver is marked 827, so it is a lesser grade than sterling. There is nice age-related patina which could be polished, but gives the bracelet a wonderful vintage look. Bracelet has a hollow construction and there are a few minor dings in the metal, although not enough to detract from its appearance. Marked BH on the clasp for Bernhard Hertz.
