This cute 64 page hardcover was originally copyrighted in Germany in 1934 by Berta Hummel. This copy is from the 1964 ninth edition published by Emil Fink-Verlag of Stuttgart with translation by Lola Eytel and poems & preface by Margaret Seeman. The preface is a very interesting bio of the artist known as Hummelchen (little bumble-bee) as a child, who became a nun. She painted in spare time and the images were made into postcards. Franz Goebel, the owner of a porcelain company, struck a deal with the convent to produce figurines from her art and "the rest is history". She died of tuberculosis in 1946 at age 37, but her art and figurines have lived on. The book contains dozens of illustrations, each with a poem, capturing the beauty of the children she depicted. The book does not have a dust jacket but is in good condition with light foxing on some pages. It's a terrific find for the Hummel collector or wonderful gift. Shipping USPS First Class - $3.50.
