Antique 19th C English "Chinese Pattern" Chinoiserie Ironstone Plate, Hope & Carter

This attractive chinoiserie style dinner plate was made by Hope & Carter of Burslem, Staffordshire in the 1860's. The body is ironstone, and the design is transfer printed in dark blue with bright over-glaze enamels. The pattern is similar to the older "Boy in the Door" pattern.

The plate is 10" in diameter. The condition is excellent. No chips, no cracks, no crazing, no repairs. There are a couple of tiny flakes to the enamel over-glaze decoration.

Geoffrey Godden states that the garter form mark by this company "occurs on patterns of the 1860's". The company was in business from 1862-80. Besides the printed garter mark which states the pattern name and the initials H & C , there are multiple other marks on the back of this plate. The words Hope & Carter Burslem are impressed. There is a pattern number hand written in red which looks like 1971 (?), and an impressed letter "C".
