Specializing in Early 19th C English Ceramics & Meiji Era Japanese Ceramics
This antique, 19th C Staffordshire Theater Portrait figure is pictured on page E371 of P.D. Gordon Pugh's "Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Era".
He describes it as "Standing leaning to the right, wearing a plumed round hat, long coat with ermine edging, double and hose, knee-boots."
Mr. Pugh also observes that the figure is "Based on a penny plain, tuppence coloured theatrical "combat" print inscribed Mr. KEAN as RICHARD the THIRD."
This figure stands 9" high. Condition is very good, with the main flaw being the repair to the top of the hat. There is a hairline crack at the base which continues up to the front of the base. There are various small nicks.
This figure has an anomaly. He should be holding a sword in his right hand. I believe the painter forgot to put in the sword. I have black-lighted the figure, and the only evidence of repair or re-painting is at the hat.
Mr. Pugh has classified this figure as "Rare" by which he means he has seen or heard of ten or under.
An international sale presents problems (for me) of insurance. Therefore both International and US sales will be shipped by USPS Priority Registered Mail, which I will figure once I have the buyer's address.
