This handsome, large cylindrical vase (or brush pot) features a heavily enameled flying crane. It is clearly marked Kinkozan on the face of the vase. I believe it could date as early as 1840.

A very similar vase of that date is pictured on page 209 of Sandra Andracht's book: "Price Guide to Oriental Antiques" published in 1981. Also, another expert on Asian ceramics, Jan-Erik Nillson of Gotheborg, Sweden says: "It is generally accepted that marks that include "Dai Nippon" in Japanese characters on the whole date to the Meiji (1868-1912) period, reflecting the greatly increased nationalism of that period. " This vase is not marked "Dai Nippon", and may pre-date the Meiji era.

The vase is 9-3/4" high with a 4-1/2" diameter. It is in excellent condition. No chips, no cracks, no repairs.
