Specializing in Early 19th C English Ceramics & Meiji Era Japanese Ceramics
Condition is excellent! No chips, no cracks, no crazing, no repairs. The dish rings when struck. There are some utensil marks, and a few scratches on the blue-green enamel of the central design which are shown in close up photos below.
All of my reference books call Wedgwood's Stone China "rare" and state that "examples are scarce". As far as dating this dish, Robin Reilly says in his "Wedgwood The New Illustrated Dictionary" that the dates for this stone china "should be extended at least to c.1817-29". In "Godden's Guide to Ironstone" he says, "Although some authorities suggest that Wedgwood's Stone China was produced up to 1861...no orders for these wares subsequent to Oct. 1829" have been discovered.
The dish is marked: WEDGWOOD'S STONE CHINA in printed underglaze blue. Impressed with the number 5. There is a hand painted gilt "P" and a blue-green "S".
