Unusual form of shallow fruit basket (morikago) with an enclosed pedestal base standing on 3 peg feet. This type of basket is used during the sencha tea ceremony. Sencha differs from the chanoyu tea ceremony in the use of green leaf tea, rather than powdered tea.

The basket is small: diameter is about 8-1/4" (21 cm), and stands about 6-1/4" (15.5 cm) high. Excellent condition. No breaks. Estimated age: late Meiji-early Taisho, or c. 1890-1910.

Fresh to the market from a Vashon Island estate.
