Japanese Red Lacquered Noh Mask of the long-nosed goblin (or "pride- fallen monk") "Tengu". Of carved, gessoed, and lacquered wood. The mask is about 8-3/8" long ( 21.5 cm), and with the nose extends about 6-1/2" (16.5 cm) There are many histories and descriptions of this Noh Theater character available on the internet. This particular mask is a wonderful old example dating late 19th C -early 20th C.
Very good condition with only a few cracks and nicks to the finish. No structural problems. There are marks inside the mask, one relating to provenance. We were told that Mr. R.W. Hempel of Indiana collected this mask in Japan in the 1920's.
