In the book, "Silver & Pewter" by Donald L. Fennimore, there is a large photo with description of an almost identical pair of candlesticks on page 314. The book is one of the series in the "Knopf Collector's Guides to American Antiques".

To quote from the book's description: "Spool-shaped candle cup has removable bobeche with broad gadrooned rim...narrow neck flanked by 2 gadrooned borders. Flared, molded circular base with gadrooned border."

He goes on to say that a number of firms (both in the Midwest and in the East (notably Meriden Britannia Co.)produced identical designs, and that many pieces are unmarked. They date c.1840-50.

About 1850, pewter fell out of vogue, being replaced with the new silverplated wares.

This set of candlesticks retain their removable bobeche. There is a quarter-inch difference in their height: one is 9-1/2" high, and one 9-3/4" high. The bases are about 4-1/4" in diameter. Their condition is excellent, with only a few faint scratches and areas of discoloration. They are not signed.
