Remarkable Large Chamberlains Worcester Porcelain Pierced Handled Dessert Dish or Under Tray with the rare British Royal Arms Mark. It measures about 12-3/4" (32.5 cm) from handle to handle. Antique, early 19th C, 1816-36. It is decorated with hand painted roses and trimmed with blue and gold.

Excellent condition, with only slight wear to some of the decoration. No cracks, no crazing, no repairs. One tiny "flea bite" to the back of two of the extruding tips which decorate the edge of the dish.

The mark is printed in red. It shows the pre-1837 Royal Arms, "Chamberlains Worcester N 155 New Bond Street London" and "Royal Porcelain Manufacturers" (in script). The lower 3/4 of the mark is surrounded by a wreath. This mark is shown as #48A in the "Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain" by John Sandon..

There is embossing around the plate, most easily seen in photo #3.

Hard paste or soft paste? I found one fabulous dessert set with this mark on the internet (at Earle D. Vanderkar of Knightsbridge) which was described as soft paste. Geoffrey Godden seems to say that Chamberlains was making a hybrid hard paste during this time. There is a slight yellowish cast to the dish, and under 10 power magnification the tiny chip seems to show granulation. You be the judge!
