This very Lovely Antique work of Art, has a remarkable shape. While it tells a story of the Dutch Landscape and life, with the all important water ways and their ever present effect upon Dutch Culture and day to day living. Keeping in mind that the Netherlands has been an export and Trading driven society since the late 1500's. Each of the four sides has a panel with a different scene, representing Dutch life. The top of the box is covered with no less than five different scenes, and each scene is separated by golden flowers and leaves and each of the four side panels has the same golden flowers and leaves surrounding them. On each of the four corners of the box are flying buttresses which act as feet and also connecting points for the box to come together. These flying Buttresses deviate from the straight classical lines of the past and soften the classical look of this object representing the more softening lines of the Jugendstil and Art Nouveau periods. This object shows a nation that is proud of itself based on the past and looks forward to a wonderful future. This box was made for PARE of Den Haag, a company that made deserts and Liquorice and this work of art was designed to hold those sweeteners of life. The Pare company was established in 1898 and as I understand went out of business in 1939. I believe this Tin to have been designed to look old from its creation and it is around a hundred years old now. The box has a key hole in front and a lock on the inside, but we do not have the key. It is a large tin approximately 13.5 inches long, approximately 9,5 inches wide and approximately 7 inches high. There are some worn spots as can be seen in the photos, but the overall condition is good considering its age. Enjoy the art while you are shopping.
