Chestnuts... what could be more perfect for the season of crackling fires and festive gatherings? Not your usual floral, this fabulous hand painted bowl displays these wonderful treats as they grow, a sight not many of us are familiar with anymore. An unexpected subject. Just beautiful.

China painting was a popular hobby from the late 19th thru the early 20th centuries in the US. And I've seen many painted pieces that look to have been done by amateurs, but C. B. Meredith was a pro.

The organically shaped bowl seems perfectly suited to it's unusual subject. The lip curves into the bowl much like the husks of the chestnut curve around the glossy brown nuts inside. The artist here made an auspicious choice, creating a harmony between subject and object that joins the two into more than the sum of their parts. It is a stunning piece.

The bowl sits on four hollow feet, each surrounded by molded decoration that reminds me a bit of oak leaves. The inside is painted with a warm orange luster, a perfect complement to the russet tones of the season. But the real treat here are those chestnuts so beautifully depicted on the outside of the bowl. The painting on this piece is particularly lovely, and really makes it stand out from the crowd.

This piece is completely hand painted, no transfers, the colors a lovely blend of ambers, oranges, golds, and greens, and the hand of the artist is sure and confident. Fuzzy green husks are depicted in exacting detail, you can practically feel them.

Condition is grand, no problems. The mark on the bottom is Paul Muller Selb Bavaria, whom I believe made the blank, and the bowl is signed by the artist C B Meredith. Measures approximately 8" x 7", and stands 3˝" at it's tallest point.

This wonderful piece combines color, form, proportion and subject into a delicious harmony. This bowl simply sings. Treat yourself.

A kind Ruby Lane visitor has sent me some additional information on the painter of this wonderful piece:

"Charlotte B. Meredith lived and worked in Liberty, Sullivan County, NY. She was trained in art in Callicoon, NY and for many years painted art scenes on tanned leather that was sold in this resort area. She made her living painting in oils and on china usually of the highest quality... She was also a teacher and has an china guild named in remembrance of her. She passed in 1974 at the age of 84."

Thank you Ruby Lane visitors!
