The pink color is positively delicious. The combination of pink and yellow always looks very Chinese to me, but the designs on these plates seem to reflect many eastern influences, from far to near. From the stylized lotus blossoms to the mandala like spinning wheels, this set exemplifies the appeal and influences of 'The East' on 19th C British design.
Bearing the typical black mark of Crown Derby Porcelain which later became Royal Crown Derby, there are also various hand painted numbers, and one plate (pictured) has the impressed "DERBY" name. 1877 - 1890.
Condition is good, with no chips, cracks or repairs that I can see. There is wear to the paint, particularly the blue, more on some plates than on others, but the design has so many colors and is so lively that it really isn't terribly noticeable. The plates measure 9 3/8" in diameter, and the compote measures 9" in diameter.
So whether you're preparing those watercress sandwiches, delicate rose scented Turkish delight, or your very own favorite family recipe... well, whichever way you slice it, you can serve it up on this wonderful set... and did I mention how lovely these pink and yellow beauties will look in your cabinet? Kettle's on...
