A Felicitous Gathering of Curious Goods - Have a question? Need more information? Email me - mjbakst@yahoo.com
Condition is great, with no chips, cracks, dings, dents, or other imperfections that I can see. A bit of tarnish, you can give them a higher polish if you wish. Each swan measures 3 3/4" long, 2 1/4" wide, and 2 3/4" tall.
The mark is from Theodore B. Starr, who was a jeweler and retailer of fine goods from the mid to late 19th into the very early 20th C. In his day, the Theodore B. Starr name was as well known as Tiffany is today. I believe that these pieces were manufactured by the William B. Durgin Co., founded in 1853 in Concord, NH, and purchased by Gorham in 1905. Often the makers name was left off items retailed by Theodore B. Starr.
These are wonderful little sculptures, exacting examples of American craftsmanship displaying the Victorian love of nature and the sinuous curves typical of Art Nouveau design. Sold as a pair since swans mate for life ;-)
A wonderful addition to many collections... salts, silver, swans... or just the most fantastic pretties to decorate your table, dresser, or bath. Treat yourself or someone special.
