Treachery on Ice in Grisaille - F. Holland 1920

A delightful watercolor painting of a young ice skater escaping the pursuit of a goateed villain by strewing sand on the ice. Well rendered and painted in grisaille with expressive characters and action, this painting has the look of an illustration, certainly suggesting an embroiled narrative, but I'm not sure what the whole story might be.

Condition is fine with no problems to report. The piece is beautifully framed with a linen mat and inner gilded filet adding a bit of gravitas to a spirited, amusing scene. Measures 24 1/4" x 29 1/2" overall, with the sight size of the painting being 15 1/4" x 20 1/2". Signed and dated "F. Holland 1920" on the lower right corner.

This is a witty painting, with the characters wearing old fashioned strap-on ice skates that have little decorations on the tips of the curved blades. But the real fun comes in imagining the story behind the characters... is there a hero or villain... on second thought, perhaps the goateed man is chasing a young mischief maker... hmmm... I'm sure you've got a perfect spot for this one.
